As I have been adjusting to life on the MC campus I have also been adjusting and getting used to the rules and regulations. Most of the rules on the MC campus I understand are for my safety as well as the safety of others. Such as the rule about drinking or coming on to campus intoxicated or drunk. Drunk people are a danger to not only themselves but everyone around them; so that rule makes perfect sense to me. I also understand, as stupid as it may be why we are not allowed to have candles in the dorm room. Yes, they are a fire hazard and could cause a fire that could injure people or cause monetary damage.
What I don't understand, however, is why I am not allowed to keep a candle that I have pulled the wick out of; and in case you didn't know, the wick is the part of the candle that makes it possible to have fire. So how is a candle, which is unable to burn, a danger to anybody? Unless of course you use it as a blunt object to hurl at somebody which a stapler, book, knick-knacks, or vase would work perfectly fine for and yet we are allowed to have those items. The rule about not being able to have nice smelling, pretty wax is positively ridiculous!
I also understand why at MC they are very strict when it comes to having members of the opposite sex in a dorm room. I knew coming to MC that it was a very conservative college and that rules regarding the opposite sex would be strict. I do have a lot of respect for these rules because to be honest I don't really want to walk in on my roommate and her boyfriend doing anything unseemly.
However, I do think it is ridiculous that when my friend Will was in my room with me, with the door open and us sitting on opposite sides of the room from each other calling out definitions and studying for a test that I had the same RA come into my room seven times! Seven times! That is a little bit unnecessary in my opinion and is basically like beating a dead horse. So while I do understand that rules are there for a reason and respect the rules, I also see how some rules at MC are thrown completely out of proportion.
